Harriet Wilson’s 1859 novel,
Our Nig: Sketches from the Life of a Free Black, was the first published novel by an African-American woman and the first novel by a Black writer to be published in the US. By being the recollection of a free African-American woman’s experiences as a servant for a white family in Massachusetts, Our Nig provided a picture of racism in the antebellum North.
